Overview
Losing, with confetti
Row has failed at a lot of things. Tonight, every one of them is invited.
The Failure Party is a narrative VR game about getting lost on the way to yourself. The player follows Row, a slightly chipped teacup man, through four absurd dream worlds: a beach where lost things wash up, an island of stars stuck in trees, a theatre of heckling clown masks, and a maze lit like a birthday cake.
It isn’t a sad story. It’s a silly one, about the strange dignity of trying, failing, and turning up to the party anyway.

Inspiration
Celebrating a failure
SpaceX’s Starship exploded minutes after launch, and the engineers watching cheered. The flight had cleared the pad and taught them what the next one needed.
A museum in Helsingborg, Sweden, made entirely of products that flopped. Visitors laugh, recognise themselves, and leave lighter.
Failure, it turns out, is funny once you’re allowed to look at it. Could a game give people that permission, in a world they can walk around in?
Research
How people meet failure
I sent out 100 questionnaires asking people what failure means to them, how it feels, how they deal with it, and what actually helps. The answers were honest and remarkably alike: most of us fail quietly, assume we’re the only one, and nobody throws a party.
“Honestly? It will be fine when the sun rises.”

Three things that help
“Life is like tea: you can only pour more once the cup is empty.”
Old Chinese sayingConcept
Seawater and electricity
Years ago nobody believed seawater could make electricity. Failure is like that: a kind of energy we haven’t learned to use yet.
So the game lets the player live someone else’s story in a dreamlike place that asks nothing of them. They meet their own failures sideways, with nothing to lose and something to celebrate.

Narrative
Row’s story
Row is a teacup man. He once dreamed up the perfect someone, then got a normal life and misplaced the dream, along with most of his wishes and some of his nerve.
One night he goes back into his dreams to find her. It does not go smoothly. A jellyfish eats his excuses, the stars are stuck in the trees, a crowd of clown masks heckles him, and the exit is a maze. At the end he finds who he was looking for: himself, slightly chipped. Then the party starts.

Design
Four scenes, four ridiculous obstacles
Each scene throws a different kind of failure at Row, and each one is beaten the same way: not by winning, but by letting go of something. The mood climbs from curiosity to hope, wobbles on nerve, and lands on peace.

One mechanism: gain and lose
Every interaction is a trade between having and not having. You take a star and give up a wish, fight for something and let something go. Success and failure become two hands of the same gesture.

Curiosity
Scene 01
The beach of lost things
Row lands on a misty beach where everything people give up on eventually washes ashore.
A wooden figure stands very still in the fog. It is the girlfriend he dreamed up, now looking a bit like furniture.

Feed it a failure. It glows, burps politely, and floats off with it.
Ninety-five percent water, zero percent judgement.
Hope
Scene 02
Stars stuck in trees
Stars stay in the sky because somebody is wishing on them. Stop wishing, and they fall.
They land, apparently, in trees, like lost kites. Row used to talk to the stars every night. He has some apologising to do.

Walk up to a tree, free a star, and write your wish on it.
Other players’ wishes float around the island. Some are profound. Some are not.
Nerve
Scene 03
The heckling theatre
Every joke ever made at Row’s expense is here, as a floating clown mask with excellent comic timing.
Below them, a lake of puppets frozen mid-bow. Clowns play the fool for everyone else. Row is done playing the fool for anyone.

Point a star at a mask and it pops.
With the masks gone, the puppets wake up and finally take their bow.
Peace
Scene 04
The birthday-cake maze
A maze lit with far more candles than anyone needs. Somewhere inside, Row works out that the someone he has been chasing all game was himself, which is embarrassing, and also the point.
He goes underground, meets the old self he left on the beach, and they light one more candle together. The party can start.

Finding yourself is never a straight line.
There’s no wrong door. Several silly ones.
It’s a party.
Leave your old self behind or bring them along. Either way, they’re invited.
Process
Building it in VR
I modelled the characters and props in Blender and Cinema 4D, textured them in Substance Painter, and built the world in Unreal Engine 5, testing again and again in an Oculus headset. Scene 1 runs in VR, with the jellyfish answering clicks and text input; the rest of the journey is shown in the film.

Next
Future steps
New paths and scenes, including a thread with Row’s family.
A calm moment in Scene 2: breathe in time with the trees and they let the stars go.
Players never talk directly. They meet through the wishes and answers they leave for each other.

The Failure Party

Row

Row
