Double Exposure

A 1950s jazz bar with a mystery upstairs

A solo concept project for THED730. Nothing has been built; the images are concept sketches, renders and boards.

A jazz bar where the story is optional. Guests can sit back with a drink and the band, or spend the night working out what happened to the AI actress who paid for the place.

Overview

A bar first, a mystery if you want it

Double Exposure is a three-story narrative jazz bar set in the 1950s. Its patron is Miss Luna, an AI film actress who commissioned the bar and then disappeared. Her films, her music and the database she was built from are spread across the building.

I designed the whole concept on my own: the story, the guest flow, the three floors and the look. The core idea is that the bar works as a bar first. The mystery is there for anyone who wants it, and never in the way of anyone who doesn’t.

Who was Luna, and where did she go?

The challenge

Two kinds of guest, one night

A themed bar has to earn repeat visits as a bar. A mystery has to earn attention as a story. They pull in different directions.

  1. 01

    A bar first

Most guests come for a drink and a conversation. The story can’t demand their attention or block their table.

  2. 02

    Two kinds of guest

Some want ambience, some want a game. Both need to feel the night was made for them.

  3. 03

    One story, three floors

The mystery has to read as one thread whether a guest stays on Floor 1 or climbs to the archive.

  4. 04

    A night that repeats

The bar runs every night. The story needs moments that recur on schedule without feeling canned.

How might a bar tell a mystery that guests can either overhear with a drink in hand or play all night?

StoryWho is Luna, and why is she the patron?
FlowHow do guests choose how deep to go, without being sorted at the door?
SpaceHow does each floor carry a different part of her story?

The story

The actress who wasn’t there

The name is the premise. In photography, a double exposure lays one image over another. Here, an AI actress is laid over the real actress she was built from.

Portrait of Miss Luna
Miss Luna

An AI film actress of the 1950s silver screen, built from the archive of a real actress who shared her name. She commissioned the bar, supplied its menu and music, and vanished.

The rumor

Staff and regulars only know what the guests know: Luna paid for all of it, and nobody has seen her since.

The question

Was Luna a copy, a person, or something in between? The bar never answers outright. Each floor offers evidence.

Her films

Mystery

The Invisible Murder

In an abandoned mansion, a gun fires every night and kills a young woman in a painting. It looks supernatural, until people realize someone in the real world seems to be dying each night too. A story about fear and hidden crimes.

Science fiction

The Lover at the End of Memory

A scientist is stranded on a frozen planet after his ship breaks down. Over the years his memories fade. When he realizes he is forgetting his wife’s face, he sets out to paint her portrait before it’s gone. A story about memory, loneliness and love across distance.

Plot in development

The Opera Telescope

An observatory where a telescope shows glimpses of the future. The third film’s full plot is still being written, so on Floor 2 it is the most open-ended scene.

Guest flow

Two ways through the night

Guests are never asked to choose at the door. Every route starts at the same table with the same band, and the mystery is something you can lean into or ignore.

Guest flow: two ways through the night

Both routes share the bar, the band and the screens. The game layer sits on top of the bar, not beside it.

The building

One stage, three floors

One live band stage runs through all three floors. It is the spine of the bar: wherever you are, you can hear and see the same performance, so the floors feel like one night.

Concept section: one live stage through three floors
Concept section, not to scale. Floor 1 the bar, floor 2 the film sets, floor 3 the archive, with one live stage through all three.

Floor 1

The Bar

Floor 1 is a fully working bar. The story is placed where guests already pause: in line, at the table, at the stage.

Floor 1 plan: concept zoning
  1. 01

    Queue · keyhole photo wall

A keyhole-shaped photo installation shares what is publicly known about the bar and Luna. Guests read clues and newspaper fragments while they wait.

  2. 02

    Guest seating

Hosts guide guests to tables and let them settle in before anything happens.

  3. 03

    Four LED screens

Luna appears across four screens, dancing from one to the next. Her image moves through the room.

  4. 04

    Band & detectives

A jazz band sets the mood. Detective characters mingle with the crowd, quietly asking about Luna’s disappearance.

Floor 2

The Film Sets

Floor 2 is built as three film sets from Luna’s career. Seating is flexible: guests can sit anywhere inside a scene.

Midnight Murder in the Painting

A painting where a gun fires every 15 minutes. Each shot reveals a new clue, so the scene rewards anyone who stays for a second drink.

Draw Her Again

There is no astronaut in the room, only the painting. It is a projection that slowly shows him drawing his wife’s face, so guests watch a memory being rebuilt.

The Opera Telescope

An observatory scene. Guests look through a telescope that shows visions of the future.

Floor 3

The Luna Archive

The top floor is the database Luna was built from: everything ever collected about the real actress. It is where the question of real versus artificial is answered, as far as it ever is.

Floor 3, the Luna Archive: archive lounge
Floor 3 plan: the Luna Archive
  1. 01

    Clue terminals

Vintage computers for searching the archive, comparing records and uncovering hidden clues.

  2. 02

    Archive bookshelves

Physical clues and references about Luna’s life. Guests explore and cross-check.

  3. 03

    Flexible room

Movable seating and rolling bookshelves let the floor reconfigure, and it can be rented for daytime events.

Touchpoints

How the story reaches the table

The narrative is delivered through things a bar already has. Each touchpoint has a job in the story and a job in service.

My role

One designer, four parts

Double Exposure is a solo project. I took it from the first premise to the finished boards.

i

Story

Invented Luna, the AI actress who paid for the bar, and the three films that make up her career.

  • Luna’s backstory and the question the bar never answers
  • Three film plots, one still in development
  • The house note guests read at the table
ii

Experience and guest flow

Designed a night that works as a bar first and a game second.

  • Two routes through the same night
  • Touchpoints that do a service job and a story job
  • Timed scenes and detective characters
iii

Spatial design

Arranged three floors around one live stage.

  • Floor 1 bar, Floor 2 film sets, Floor 3 archive
  • A stage that runs through all three floors
  • A flexible archive floor that can be rented by day
iv

Visual development

Set the look of 1950s noir for the whole building.

  • Facade sketch and signage
  • Moodboard and palette
  • Concept renders for each floor

Reflection

What I’d keep

Optional is a design decision

Making the story optional didn’t make it smaller. It made every touchpoint work twice: as service and as story.

A spine holds a story together

The stage running through three floors did more for narrative unity than any single scene.

Next

Name the signature cocktails and set list, script the detectives, and resolve how the night ends for guests who reach the archive.
